Downing eyes Premier League glory

Stewart Downing: Signed fom Villa

Liverpool newcomer Stewart Downing believes his club will challenge for the Premier League title if they can continue the run of form they displayed before the international break.
Downing, 27, made the move to Anfield during the recent summer transfer window from Aston Villa, and says the club's upcoming fixtures - particularly their trip to the Britannia this Saturday - will prove crucial in their bid for silverware.

"There is a feelgood factor at Liverpool," Downing said. "We started the season very well but we've got a tough run of games coming up, starting with Stoke.

"But, if we keep playing the way we are at Liverpool, we've got a hell of a chance of being in the top bracket."

The winger was in fine form during England's 1-0 win over Wales on Tuesday, setting up the winner for former Villa team-mate Ashley Young. On a personal note, Downing hopes his performances for the national team will carry over to his appearances in a red jersey.

"It's been a good start to the season for me for club and country. Maybe I'm a little bit more confident on the England stage now and playing well at club level helps.

"Getting a run of games helps your confidence and getting used to the players around me. It would be nice to stay in the England team and I've just got to keep playing well and hopefully that will happen," he said.
