Roger Federer was back to his imperious best to brush aside the challenge of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and book a U.S. Open semifinal clash with world number one Novak Djokovic.

Federer, a five-time champion in New York, gained revenge for a run of two successive defeats to the Frenchman -- at Wimbledon and in Montreal -- to record a 6-4 6-3 6-3 victory.

He will now face Djokovic in the final four on Saturday after the Serbian edged past fellow countryman Janko Tipsarevic, who retired in the fourth set.

Tipsarevic took the game to his practice partner and had just leveled the match at one set all when he became hampered by injury. He eventually threw in the towel with the score at 7-6 6-7 6-0 3-0.
