T.I. to Celebrate Freedom With Welcome Home

T.I. is coming home at last, and ready to throw it down fo sho.

But the recently-released rapper, now serving out the remainder of his prison term in a halfway house, isn't throwing himself a nightclub bash a la Lil Wayne.

He's having a $100,000 welcome-home brunch in Atlanta!
T.I. and Tiny
T.I.'s friend Diddy is personally shipping in 150 bottles of Ciroc, ONE FOR EACH PERSON in attendance. Hey, gotta welcome the man back to society in style.

Additionally, reps from AKOO, T.I.'s clothing line, sales of which have spiked since his incarceration, will measure the VIP guests for custom-made clothing gifts.

It's set for October 2, two days after T.I. gets out of the halfway house. Hopefully he takes a cab instead of a pimp-ass tour bus. You know how that can turn out.

2 die in U.S. Embassy shooting incident in Kabul

Afghanistan has been the site of several high-profile attacks of late, including the killing of ex-President Burhanuddin Rabbani.
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- An Afghan employee killed a U.S. citizen and wounded another at an annex of the American Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, a spokesman said Monday.

The Afghan employee was the lone gunman and was killed, according to Gavin Sundwall, a U.S. Embassy spokesman.

"The motivation of the attack is still under investigation," he said. The shootings took place Sunday evening.

The wounded American was evacuated to a military hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The annex area is known as a place where embassy personnel both live and work, some in intelligence operations. A CIA spokeswoman declined to comment on the attack.

Afghanistan has been the site of several high-profile attacks of late, including strikes at the NATO headquarters and the U.S. Embassy in Kabul and the assassination of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani. Rabbani had been leading efforts for reconciliation talks.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta contended Thursday that such attacks represent a strategy shift by the Taliban, the conservative and militant group that has been waging a years-long fight in the war-torn nation.

"We judge this change in tactics to be a result of a shift in momentum in our favor and a sign of weakness in the insurgency," Panetta said at a Senate Armed Service Committee hearing.

He added that "the insurgency has been turned back in much of the country, including its heartland in the south, and Afghan National Security Forces are increasingly strong and capable."

Mike Mullen, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, testified then that he felt Pakistan is "exporting" violence to Afghanistan. He described the Haqqani terrorist network as "a veritable arm of Pakistan's intelligence" -- an assertion that Pakistani officials later strongly denied, even as it admitted the country does have contacts with the group.

August was the deadliest month for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since the conflict began. Seventy-one American troops died that month, including 30 killed when insurgents shot down a helicopter August 6 in the eastern central province of Wardak.

The surge in U.S. deaths comes as NATO is drawing down and handing over security control to national forces. Some 10,000 U.S. troops are scheduled to depart by year's end, with all U.S. military personnel out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Rooney could miss 'weeks'

Wayne Rooney
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Wayne Rooney could miss "a few weeks" of Manchester United's season.United served up a surprise at Stoke on Saturday, as they arrived at the Britannia Stadium without their star man. Ferguson told ESPN after the 1-1 draw that the club had endured a "nightmare" training session on Friday. And it appears Rooney was one of the casualties with a hamstring injury.

"Rooney's is not a serious injury, but it was enough to keep him out today, and I think maybe for a few weeks," Ferguson said.

United lost Jonny Evans in the warm-up, while Javier Hernandez lasted less than 10 minutes before limping off.

If Rooney's problem is as bad as feared, he could miss United's Champions League match with Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday and possibly England's Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro on October 7. United also have Premier League games with Liverpool and Manchester City on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Ferguson labelled Stoke's Peter Crouch a persistent fouler after the striker netted in the 1-1 draw between the clubs as he darted between Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jones to nod home a second half equaliser.

"He fouls all the time," Ferguson said. "He gets off with it because of his height, but he jumps on top of defenders all the time. He has been doing that for a long time. Referees know that. Even with the goal he has maybe caught Phil Jones. He's a handful in the air, no doubt about that."

With 'real-time' apps, Facebook is always watching

Facebook announced a new class of
(CNN) -- A couple years ago, a Microsoft researcher named Gordon Bell embarked on a personal experiment: He would wear a video camera around his neck all the time and keep this "life recorder" always turned on, so it would record everything he did.

It was like an external memory drive for his brain, he wrote in a book called "Total Recall."

Sounds pretty sci-fi, right? Not so much. The "real-time sharing" updates Facebook announced Thursday aim to do something quite similar -- only for the Internet instead of in real life.

Before we get into the details and implications, here's a "real-time" example of how the updates, which are rolling out in the coming weeks, will work: As I write this, I'm listening to the band LCD Soundsystem on an Internet music service called Spotify. Because I've updated my Facebook page (here's a TechCrunch article on how to do that if you're interested) and because I've logged in to Spotify with my Facebook identity, every song I listen to is automatically shared to Facebook.

Wenger confident of Van Persie future

Robin van Persie
Arsene Wenger is confident captain Robin Van Persie will lead Arsenal well into the future, dismissing the notion the Dutchman will ultimately join Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in exiting the Emirates.Van Persie ended a difficult week for the Gunners on a high on Saturday, as he registered his 100th Arsenal goal in a comprehensive 3-0 victory over 10-man Bolton. After the relieving win, Wenger confirmed his star striker sought assurances during the summer regarding the direction of the club.

"It's true that we had a meeting during the summer," Wenger said. "If you're in Robin's place and you see Nasri going, Fabregas going, then you can be worried of course."

The club faces a similar problem to the Nasri one if Van Persie does not sign an extension to his current contract, which expires in 2013, with the striker having stalled talks "because we are so busy".

"Maybe I'll leave it [holding immediate talks] because the main thing for me is the team and that we play well," Van Persie was reported as saying in a number of national newspapers.

"I do believe you have to look for a right moment to sit down and speak about your own stuff. It's not only about me, it's about the team. We are not talking now because we are so busy - we have games every three or four days.

"I don't think it's clever to do that during the season. I still have almost two years left here, so for the moment that's fine. But I don't know, we will have to look.

"I'm happy with my contract, I'm good. That's how it is, I can't say much more. I can't look into the future."

But Wenger is not concerned. "Now he [Van Persie] is out? No, I don't think that really. Robin is not from Barcelona," he quipped.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old's goalscoring achievement is made all the more impressive by the fact he started his career at the club predominantly as a wide player. Wenger since moved Van Persie to become the focal point of the team's three-man attack, but he is far from the typical targetman, with Wenger comparing the style of his No. 10 to that of Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

"I see similarities positional-wise with Messi. He comes deep, he likes to turn up up front as well," Wenger said.

"Positional-wise he doesn't play like a real centre forward. But when you look at his movement around the box he's very intelligent, goes on diagonal runs. I always thought his first touch was so good that he can make a difference even in a tight space."

Van Persie took over the captain's armband from Fabregas after the Spaniard returned to Barcelona. Wenger praised the former Feyenoord front-man for the leadership he has shown since taking on the role.

Wenger said: "He has matured from the boy who was a little bit emotionally impulsive when he arrived to the guy who is here today.

"That was difficult to predict. But he is intelligent, speaks his mind and you can speak to him as well. He takes advice and overall he has developed very well."

Gower: Torres tackle 'needless'Fernando Torres GettyImages

Fernando Torres
Swansea City midfielder Mark Gower feels that Chelsea striker Fernando Torres deserved the red card he received at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.Torres opened scoring for Chelsea in their 4-1 win over Swansea but was sent off in the first half of the Premier League match for a two-footed tackle on Gower, who has branded the challenge as "needless".

"It was not a nice tackle and it was definitely a red card," Gower said. "Thankfully, I have managed to get most of my body out of the way. He has caught my ankle but you'll have to ask him why he has done it.

"It seemed like a needless tackle at the time. I had half a bad touch so I was stretching. He seemed to lunge in and I caught him out of the corner of my eye and tried to get out of the way.

"His feet came off the floor and there was intent. I've a graze but it won't affect me. I'll be fit for next week."

Look What Justin Bieber Did for Selena Gomez

Jelena in Malibu
Justin Bieber might be a keeper.

Sources confirm to TMZ that the singer set up a special date for girlfriend Selena Gomez last night. A VERY special date.

After seeing Demi Lovato in concert at the Nokia Theater, Justin reportedly took Selena through the underground tunnel that connects that locale with the Staples Center and surprised her with a completely empty arena in which the pair watched Titanic together.

Incredibly, Bieber didn't have to fork over a dime to rent out the 20,000-seat stadium. It was given to him for free because his concerts have sold out the venue three times. Seriously, Selena, you might wanna keep this guy around.

Messi and Ronaldo hit hat-tricks

Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring his fine first goal
Lionel Messi matched Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick as Barcelona turned on the style to dismiss in-form Atletico Madrid 5-0 at the Nou Camp.
With the Rojiblancos having scored eight goals in their last two outings and Barcelona labouring against Valencia in midweek, some thought a shock may have been on the cards.

But Pep Guardiola's men laid on a performance reminiscent of the one that saw them hit Osasuna for eight last Saturday, with Messi joined on the scoresheet by David Villa, while Joao Miranda also put through his own goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his second hat-trick of the season as 10-man Real Madrid ended a poor week with a 6-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano - although it was not all plain sailing for Jose Mourinho's men.

Madrid came into the match in the spotlight having picked up just one point from their away games at Levante and Racing Santander and the title hopefuls could hardly have had a worse start as poor defending saw them trailing after just 14 seconds, Miguel Perez Cuesta the scorer.

Madrid seemingly put that dismal beginning behind them with three goals in 13 minutes either side of half-time through Ronaldo (two) and Gonzalo Higuain, but the hosts soon found themselves with more problems.

Rayo pulled a goal back in the 55th minute through Cuesta and then two minutes later Madrid lost Angel Di Maria to a second yellow card.

That left Madrid facing a potentially crucial final half-hour with a man less, knowing more dropped points - especially at home - could be decisive come the end of the season.

However, it was Mourinho's men who seemed to adapt better to the dismissal as they netted three more times to take the win, Raphael Varane, Karim Benzema and Ronaldo - with his second penalty of the match to complete his hat-trick - the goalscorers.

Freddie Kanoute's goal gave Sevilla a 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Valencia in a game dominated by three red cards at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Kanoute put Sevilla in front on 18 minutes after being sent clear by Jesus Navas.

Sevilla should have been more than one up at the break but were denied by Vicente Guaita on numerous occasions and the hosts were nearly made to pay for those wasted opportunities as first Piotr Trochowski and then Julien Escude were sent off.

Escude's dismissal also resulted in a penalty for Valencia which Ever Banega hit against the post before the visitors were also reduced to 10 men for Artiz Aduriz's apparent stamp on Emir Spahic.

A second-half equaliser from Nilmar earned Villarreal a deserved 1-1 draw at Athletico Bilbao and ensured that the home side's winless streak under Marcelo Bielsa continues.

Igor Gabilondo gave the hosts the lead just before half-time as he stretched to fire home Andoni Iraola's cross into the middle.

But Villarreal were back on level terms eight minutes after the break as Giuseppe Rossi drove into the box and laid the ball across for Nilmar to finish at the back post.

The hosts were then reduced to 10 men with 10 minutes to go as Borja Ekiza was shown his second yellow card for bringing down Nilmar as Villarreal counter-attacked, but Athletic held on for a point.

Mancini stunned by Hargreaves impact

Owen Hargreaves
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini admits he has been pleasantly surprised by the fitness of Owen Hargreaves after the midfielder made a successful return to action midweek.
Hargreaves has found himself at the centre of a row between the two Manchester clubs by claiming the medical treatment he received at United hindered his recovery from tendinitis, with Sir Alex Ferguson and the club strongly refuting claims the player felt "like a guinea pig".

Mancini, meanwhile, played down the furore surrounding his new recruit, instead focusing on Hargreaves' remarkably swift impact, given the 30-year-old has spent most of the last four seasons on the sidelines through injury.

"When we took him we thought we could recover him in two months," revealed Mancini. "Our plans were from December or January.

"It will be tougher against better opposition but on Wednesday, he played well. Not because he scored. It was because he moved well.

"Usually when a player comes back after one or two years, he has a problem with his ankle or his muscle. But after the game, there was nothing."

Mancini did, however, raise the tantalising prospect of Hargreaves featuring in the first Manchester derby of the season on October 23.

"We have to be calm and think about his body. If everything is okay in the next two or three weeks, maybe he can play against Manchester United," he said.

Stoke City can beat United

Ryan Shawcross: Highly-rated defender
Stoke City captain Ryan Schawcross believes he can get one over on former employers Manchester United when they visit the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.
Shawcross, 23, left Old Trafford in 2008 after six years at United, though in that time he only made two League Cup appearances for the club.

Since then he has gone on to establish himself as one of the Premier League's most consistent centre-backs with the Potters and is certain to start when United visit this weekend.

Stoke have lost all six of their previous Premier league clashes against United but Shawcross believes his side are capable of causing an upset and ending United's 100% record so far this season.

"Last weekend's 4-0 defeat at Sunderland was probably a bit of a reality check for us to be honest," Shawcross said. "But we move on now and must set our sights on another unbeaten run.

"It will be hard to start that off against United as they are a top team - but everyone is beatable. If we have the fans right behind us and perform in a way we know we can, we know we have a chance."

NASA: Location of satellite debris not determined

Miami (CNN) -- Kris Rakowski put the dog out late Friday and looked to the skies above his Maple Grove, Minnesota, residence.

He saw lights -- a bunch of them.

"They almost looked like fireballs or fireflies, strobing," Rakowski told CNN Saturday.

The art director, 35, who first began looking for possible signs of a plummeting U.S. satellite around 10 p.m., grabbed his camera.

He's pretty sure the photos he submitted to CNN's iReport were pieces of the satellite, which entered the Earth's atmosphere around that time. "It was a once in a lifetime opportunity," he said.

NASA said the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite's debris fell to Earth between 11:23 p.m. ET Friday and 1:09 a.m. ET Saturday.

The satellite passed over Africa and North America and likely landed off the West Coast of the United States, NASA said.

"The precise re-entry time and location of debris impacts have not been determined," NASA said. "Twenty-six satellite components, weighing a total of about 1,200 pounds, could have survived the fiery re-entry and reach the surface of Earth. However, NASA is not aware of any reports of injury or property damage. "

NASA officials said it's possible the satellite pieces hit the Pacific Ocean. Initial reported sightings of the disintegrating satellite had not proved credible because they were not near the proper track, the agency said.

Reports of suspected sightings emerged from San Antonio, where a TV photographer caught images of bright objects darting rapidly in the night sky, and from Hawaii, where Robert Jeffcoat saw what he believed were two chunks from the satellite.

Jeffcoat was running errands when the first flying object left a thick, white trail that lingered in the sky for about 20 minutes, he said. A second object followed the same path and was "massive," he said.

"It was like a comet, but smoke," he said. "I'm guessing it landed in the ocean, the way it was going."

Mark Matney of NASA's Orbital Debris team in Houston said before the rubbish fell that there was no way to know exactly where the pieces would come down.

"Part of the problem is, the spacecraft is tumbling in unpredictable ways, and it is very difficult to very precisely pinpoint where it's coming down even right before the re-entry," Matney said.

NASA said space debris the size of the satellite's components re-enters the atmosphere about once a year. Harvard University astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell noted that the satellite is far from being the biggest space junk to come back.

"This is nothing like the old Skylab scare of the '70s, when you had a 70-ton space station crashing out of the sky," McDowell said.

Pieces of Skylab came down in western Australia in 1979.

Jeffcoat said he was amazed his home of Paia, Maui, seemed to be an ideal place to watch hunks of a satellite rain from the sky.

"Of all the places in the world where it could hit, here it was, in Maui," he said. "It was quite weird."

With 'Timeline' feature, Facebook goes eternal (or at least tries to)

A baby picture of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO. He says the site's Timeline feature lets people document their entire lives.
(CNN) -- When designer Sam Lessin started working at Facebook he wanted to make a point.

So he printed his Facebook profile page and stretched it out in the company's California offices. There it was, multiple years of his life, on a scrolling piece of paper.

A story big enough to cross the room.

It's a story you'd never see on Facebook.com, he argued, since pretty much all the status updates and photos he'd posted over the years were hidden beneath a gray button at the bottom of the page: "Older Posts."

"All of the stories you've shared over time just fall off a cliff at the bottom of your (Facebook) wall and effectively disappear," company CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on stage at an event for Facebook app developers in San Francisco, where this story was retold.

That, in a nutshell, is why Facebook on Thursday unveiled a completely rethought version of its profile pages: To surface all the events and stories that are hidden from view because they happened too long ago.

1 million urged to flee as typhoon bears down on Japan

Rescue workers help evacuees through floodwaters in Nagoya.
Tokyo (CNN) -- About 80,000 residents have been ordered to flee and more than 1 million people were urged to evacuate Nagoya, a city in central Japan, Tuesday as a typhoon was expected to hit the area.

Despite the evacuation warnings, a little more than 60 people had evacuated the city by Tuesday afternoon, the city government said. More were expected to leave in the evening as the storm came closer.

Typhoon Roke was packing winds of 185 kph (115 mph) and was predicted to make landfall with heavy rain some time Wednesday, said CNN meteorologist Jennifer Delgado.

The storm was expected to hit south of Osaka and could drench some areas with about 250 mm (10 inches) of rain, Delgado said.

Two areas in the Nagoya were ordered to evacuate because of the threat of flooding from the Shonai River, officials said.

Pollution protests shut China solar plant

Hong Kong (CNN) – The lights are out at Jinko Solar. After three days of sometimes violent protests, China closed one of the company’s solar panel manufacturing plants.

The place: the town of Haining, about a two-hour drive southwest of Shanghai.

The reason: residents allege Jinko’s plant caused a mass die-off of fish and a cluster of cancer cases, including leukemia, in the local populace.

The admission: Jinko Solar now says pollutants, with fluoride levels exceeding normal limits, may have washed from its factory into a nearby river because of improper storage.

Anger first erupted on Thursday when more than 500 people gathered outside Jinko’s factory gates demanding answers. Some protesters broke into the company compound, overturning several cars and damaging buildings.

By Monday, local police said they had detained more than 20 people - some protesters for stealing and a handful of Jinko employees for destroying the camera of two local journalists - and local officials had forced the factory to go dark.

It appears that was a long time coming.

According to local environmental authorities, Jinko had failed an environmental standards test in April. It had also been fined RMB 470,000, or nearly $75,000. A test of the river further proved its water was polluted but Jinko’s operations were not halted - until Monday.

Villager frustration would be understandable.

Along with that emotion on the streets, it also came to a boil online on Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

A few messages convey the mood.

@yihaoyanzi wants authorities to be more responsive and responsible.

“Everyone is following the Jinko issue…can the progress and result of the incident, especially the final rectification plan be released in time? It’s the era of internet. When the people have new demand for the government, the government should respond actively.”

@buguoshiyizaidechengqiang had a simple message for the solar panel factory. “Get out of Haining, Jinko.”

And @fendouhua anticipated Jinko Solar would hemorrhage losses because of its alleged environmental damage. “Jinko Energy itself will pay a heavy price for its pollution problem. If its stock price falls 7-8% everyday, even with 10 billion RMB capital, it won’t last long. Therefore, the company should strictly obey relevant laws and regulations.”

And that last message couldn’t have been more appropriate. Since Thursday, when protests began, the share price of Jinko Solar’s parent company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has fallen 13.2%.

Man Utd win EPL thriller

Manchester United's Portuguese star Nani scored a superb second goal at Old Trafford
(CNN) -- Manchester United beat Chelsea 3-1 at Old Trafford Sunday in an English Premier League top of the table clash which mixed superb attacking play with comical misses by star strikers Fernando Torres and Wayne Rooney.

Rooney slipped and ended on his backside as he ran up to convert a penalty which would have given United a 4-1 lead and his second goal of the match, but his blunder was eclipsed a few moments later by Torres.

The Spain World Cup star had made up for wasting a first half chance by pulling Chelsea back into the game with a superb piece of skill to beat David De Gea in the United goal.

After Rooney's penalty miss and with his team still trailing 3-1, Torres rounded De Gea and with an open goal at his mercy somehow contrived to send his left-foot shot wide.

Torres, who had shown more than enough to suggest he is returning to his best form, was left with his head in his hands as his side's last chance of salvaging a point had disappeared.
The misses still continued with Rooney setting up substitute Dimitar Berbatov for another cast-iron opportunity but the Bulgarian's weak effort was cleared off the line by Ashley Cole.

It has been the best start to a season for United since 1985 and they started with a flourish as Chris Smalling headed home Ashley Young's free kick.

Torres screwed a right foot shot wide to spurn an immediate chance to draw Chelsea level before Portugal star Nani put the home side 2-0 ahead with a rasping strike which left Petr Cech with no chance.

Chelsea looked dangerous going forward, but defensive sloppiness after a charge forward by United defender Phil Jones left Rooney with the simplest of tap-ins to make it 3-0 just before halftime.

United's win was marred by an injury to striker Javier Hernandez, caught by a challenge from Cole as he tried to follow up on a Rooney shot that hit the post in the second half.

Manager Alex Ferguson was furious with the challenge which may sideline the Mexican for several weeks.

"For me it's a shocking tackle. The referee has booked him (Cole) and if he's booked him I don't know why it wasn't a penalty, " he told Sky Sports.

But the victory for Ferguson's men saw them pull two points clear of local rivals Manchester City, who were held 2-2 at Fulham earlier Sunday after leading 2-0.

Sergio Aguero continued his remarkable introduction to the EPL with a double strike at Craven Cottage, but City relaxed and Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy salvaged a point for the home side.

Sunday's other high-profile clash saw Tottenham Hotspur continue their recovery from a poor start to the season with a 4-0 win over Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

Luka Modric put Tottenham ahead with a superb strike and Liverpool were further handicapped by having Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel sent off in either half.

Tottenham capitalized against nine men as Jermain Defoe and the excellent Emmanuel Adebayor with a late double rubbed salt into the wound.

The other match Sunday saw Sunderland move off the bottom with a 4-0 thumping of Stoke City.

Ben Arfa set to return to action

Hatem Ben Arfa: Four games for Newcastle
Hatem Ben Arfa will finally return to the Newcastle side almost a year after suffering a double leg break against Manchester City.

Ben Arfa enjoyed a fine start to life in the Premier League after arriving on loan from Marseille, scoring a superb goal in a 2-1 win at Everton. But a poor tackle from Nigel de Jong ended his season after just four Premier League appearances.

Despite the injury, the Magpies chose to make his transfer permanent in January for a fee in the region of £10 million.

The 24-year-old suffered a setback in his bid to return for the start of the new season when carried off in a game against Sporting Kansas City on the club's pre-season tour of the United States.

Now he will pull on the black and white shirt on Wednesday night as Newcastle travel to struggling Championship side Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup.

Manager Alan Pardew, who has not had the chance to select the player after taking over from Chris Hughton, said: "He will bring a creative force to the team that is different to what we have.

"He is probably different to a lot of players in the Premier League. He's elusive on the ball.

"What's important for him is to make sure he grabs the work-rate that we have got in the team. If he grabs that, he's got a good chance of getting into this team.

"We always factored Ben Arfa in, of course. I don't think that [the addition of another striker] would have affected him.

"He will have that number 10 role that Demba Ba did on Saturday and did very, very well for us, so that's where he's got good competition.''

Pardew also praised Yohan Cabaye, who put in a man of the match performance at Aston Villa at the weekend. He said: "He will bring goals and assists. He got 14 two years ago and won the double last year with a lot of assists.

"He's a great player, he's just a good player. A couple of games passed him by because of the frantic energy of the Premier League, but he will get to grips with it.

"He is still working out his relationship with Cheick [Tiote], but that was a lot better on Saturday and if we keep those two fit, we are going to win more games than we will lose, I think.''

Cesc wins damages over article

Cesc Fabregas
Cesc Fabregas has revealed he has received an apology, retraction and damages after a magazine published an article claiming the Barcelona midfielder said he left Arsenal because he feared a prolonged trophy drought for the club.
Sport magazine attributed quotes to Fabregas, 24, which were soon rejected outright by the former Arsenal skipper, who left the Gunners for Barcelona this summer for a fee in the region of £35 million.

Fabregas has now confirmed that the issue is in the process of being resolved. He wrote on his official Twitter account: "Got the apology and retraction from that magazine that made up an interview about me. Can't believe some journalists.

"I will also get ... damages that I will give to charity. Hope it teaches them a lesson. I would NEVER say a bad word about Arsenal Football Club."

Apple bans app that shows ugly side of electronics

(CNN) -- The maker of a mobile game highlighting the uglier side of electronics production has seen the game banned from Apple's App Store just hours after its release.

The creators of "Phone Story" describe it as a game that "attempts to provoke a critical reflection on its own technological platform."

According to the developer's website, the game involves a player in cartoon versions of real-world scenarios involving mineral mining in the Congo, the reported suicides of workers at an Apple manufacturer's plant in China, the "planned obsolescence" of tech gadgets and the resulting environmental impact.

As the most profitable consumer-electronics company in the world, Apple has been front and center of discussions about all of those issues.

Paolo Pedercini, the game's Italian developer, posted a blog item on his Twitter feed Tuesday announcing the app had been pulled under the header "Phone Story RIP (13/09/2011 - 13/09/2011)."

He said Apple cited sections of its guidelines that ban apps that depict violence or abuse toward children, "excessively objectionable or crude content" or paid apps that solicit donations to causes.

The game's website says proceeds go to workers' groups and other nonprofit organizations.

In response, Pedercini said he's planning a new app that "depicts the violence and abuse of children involved in the electronic manufacturing supply chain in a noncrude and nonobjectionable way."

Apple's response was succinct.

"We removed this app from the App Store because it violates its developer guidelines," said Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr. Neumayr would not elaborate and didn't confirm or deny that the sections Pedercini cited are correct.

The game is still available for $1 in the Android Market.

It's not the first time Apple has been embroiled in controversies over electronics production (which, in fairness, are the same for many manufacturers of computers, phones and other gadgets).

Wired magazine, for one, has taken a close look at conditions at the Foxconn factory in China that makes iPhones.

The report describes nets strung around the building after a rash of worker suicides.

Amnesty International and other organizations have decried the way coltan, a mineral necessary for mobile phones, is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo -- where there are reports of bloody violence to control the coltan trade and deadly conditions for workers held in slavelike conditions.

One Amnesty documentary calls it "Blood Coltan," comparing the mineral to the "blood diamonds" mined in some African nations.

And environmental groups such as Greenpeace have blasted Apple's environmental impact, saying its products contain hazardous chemicals and their short life spans have led to massive waste.

On its site, Apple lists "supplier responsibility" actions it takes to ensure "the highest standards of social responsibility wherever our products are made."

"We insist that our suppliers provide safe working conditions, treat workers with dignity and respect, and use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes," the page says.

Apple's site says it regularly audits the companies it partners with and works with those firms to make improvements when needed.

Cech defends misfiring Torres

Fernando Torres
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech insists he is not concerned by Fernando Torres' form and is confident the striker will recover from his horror miss against Manchester United.
Despite scoring Chelsea's only goal in the Blues' 3-1 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday, Torres hit the headlines for missing an open goal, firing wide after rounding United keeper David De Gea.

But despite that miss, Cech believes Torres' instinctive second-half finish shows the Spaniard is steadily improving.

"I keep saying the same thing - I can see every time the guy is improving," Cech said. "At Stoke he had a brilliant game, while against Leverkusen he didn't score a goal but created both of them.

"On Sunday, he created a huge chance for Ramires or Daniel Sturridge. But it was a pity Ramires slid in as it was difficult for him to finish it and allowed the keeper to make a save, whereas Daniel would have just tapped it in. So it was unlucky.

"Then he scored a great goal, and got himself another opportunity. What everybody needs to remember is just how well he played for the whole game and the great goal he did score. He created a lot and his movement was there. You can see it. I'm not worried about it. He will score lots of goals.

"Everybody counts the goals a striker gets. It's always like that. But if you see, for example, Dimitar Berbatov got to United not only because he scores goals but because he created 30 every season for Tottenham.

"With Fernando it's the same. He scores goals, as he showed, but he can create them as well. Ideally, of course, you want your strikers to score. But if they can create two goals every game, then who cares how many they score?"

Despite suffering their first defeat of the season, Cech insists Chelsea could have taken all three points away from Old Trafford.

"The score doesn't really reflect on how we played," Cech said. "You might look at it, 3-1, and say it was an easy game for them. But I don't think it was.

"If you look at their goals, the first was offside, then they scored a wonder-goal from Nani - he got too much space to shoot - and then had a lucky deflection for Rooney's goal. But that was more or less all they had, while we had three big chances in the first half and didn't take them."

What's the verdict: Jane Lynch as Emmys host

What's the verdict: Jane Lynch as Emmys host
"Glee's" Dot Marie Jones predicted that co-star Jane Lynch would kill it and the viewers seem to agree: Lynch, although she didn't win an Emmy, earned accolades from critics as the host of the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards.

The "Glee" star opened with a self-aware love song to TV, complete with a cameo from "Parks and Recreation" fan fave Ron Swanson and arguably one of the best segments of the opener, a little repartee with the "Mad Men" cast.

Lynch kept her lines tactful, but they still landed: After "Modern Family" kept picking up awards, she quipped, "Welcome back to the 'Modern Family' awards." Following a bit with Ricky Gervais, who was still riffing on his Golden Globes debacle from earlier this year, Lynch responded, "Oh poor little Ricky Gervais, someone didn't get enough hugs from Mommy and now it's Hollywood's fault."

Salon critiques that last night's Emmys was a "surprisingly non-boring awards show." USA Today, however, wouldn't go quite as far as to call it "exciting."

Nonetheless, the paper found Lynch to be a "jovial host," delivering her lines "like a pro" and keeping the train moving, "generally managing to be amusing without getting in the way or wearing out her welcome."

The New York Times found her to be self-conscious at times. "Lynch occasionally stepped up in an appealing way....[But] A little like the show, she couldn't be calmed down and made more than one reference to being gay, which didn't seem that pertinent to the night."

But we'll have to agree with Salon that her line, "A lot of people are curious why I'm a lesbian. Ladies and gentleman, the cast of 'Entourage'" was the best of the night.

What did you think of Lynch's hosting job?

Wenger: Defence 'lacks co-ordination'

Arsene Wenger
Arsenal are one place above the relegation zone after winning just one of their opening five games. And having shipped 14 goals, Arsenal have the worst goal difference in the Premier League.

Wenger is under no illusions as to where improvements need to be made. With own goals from Alex Song and Laurent Koscielny compounding Wenger's misery in Saturday's 4-3 defeat to Blackburn, he has urged his players to respond, and quickly.

"A lack of concentration, a lack of communication, a lack of co-ordination and individual urgency," said Wenger of his side's problems. "When you score an own goal, you have to look at yourself. It is never completely out of your reach where you have no chance at all. All the rest, you have to look at yourself.

"The Blackburn game is very disappointing and frustrating. I must say that the disappointments and frustrations are huge. We feel that we have given this game away, not that we have lost the game. There is nothing worse in our job than having that feeling."

While Wenger admits it will take time for new signings Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos to settle into the defence, he believes how quickly Arsenal can respond is key to how the season pans out.

"I personally want to focus on the positives, because there is huge potential in this team - we had 22 shots on goal, 61 per cent of the possession," Wenger said. "I believe there is a little question of time, timing. Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker are new, but they were not especially guilty on the goals. But maybe as a unit we need more time to work."

"Our season depends now on how well we respond to this disappointment and how quickly we can cut out the mistakes we made on Saturday by giving away goals that we should never give away."

2 found dead in search for trapped miners in Wales, police say

Police direct emergency vehicles at a cordon as rescue workers try to rescue four Welsh miners.

London (CNN) -- A second of four trapped miners was found dead early Friday as rescue efforts continued in the flooded mine in Wales, British authorities said.

The body of a man found earlier Friday has now been brought to the surface, South Wales Police said. The search for the remaining two missing miners continues.

The four men had been trapped in the Gleision Colliery, in the Swansea Valley, since early Thursday. They are Phillip Hill, 45, from Neath; and Charles Breslin, 62, David Powell, 50, and Garry Jenkins, 39, from the Swansea Valley.

Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the two men found dead. They said the families of the four men had been informed.

Three other miners escaped Thursday, including one who was hospitalized.

Specialist mine rescuers, police, fire and ambulance teams continued efforts at the drift mine overnight.

No contact has been made with the trapped men, but rescuers hope they are in a pocket of air below ground, rescue officer Andrew Watson told CNN on Thursday.

Water was believed to have rushed into the mineshaft where they were working when they broke into a neighboring abandoned mine, he said. Pumps are being used to reduce the level of the water, he said.

First Minister Carwyn Jones, who leads the Welsh government, said it was a "sad day" but urged people not to give up hope for the miners still missing underground.

"I have met with the miners' families this morning and they are showing tremendous bravery and resolve although they are under enormous strain," he said in a statement.

The British government will carry out a full investigation into the incident, Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan said in a statement Friday.

"My heartfelt condolences go out to the families at this distressing time," her statement said.

As of June 2011, 1,500 people in Wales worked in the mining industry. according to government figures.

In a drift mine like the one where the men are trapped, coal is excavated from the side of a hill using shafts that are almost horizontal.

'Da sun back out' as T.I. leaves prison, again

Rapper/actor T.I. will leave will leave an Atlanta halfway house and begin a yearlong probation term on September 29.

(CNN) -- Rapper T.I. walked out of a federal prison Thursday to return to an Atlanta halfway house where he will spend the last 14 days of an 11-month prison sentence for a parole violation, his lawyer said Thursday.

T.I. was taken to the U.S. penitentiary in Atlanta two weeks ago when Bureau of Prisons officials cut short his furlough just a day after it started because they believed he violated his furlough agreement.

When T.I. walked out of an Arkansas prison on August 31, he tweeted, "The storm is over & da sun back out." A cloud, however, quickly rained on the rapper's freedom parade.

Prison documents obtained by CNN showed prison officials objected to his manager and a reality TV producer riding with him on a luxury bus on the trip from the Federal Correctional Center in Forrest City, Arkansas, to Georgia.

They quickly removed him from the halfway house, where he had expected to spend the last month of his sentence, and relocated him to the Atlanta prison.

Defense lawyer Steve Sadow pushed federal prison officials to reconsider, pointing out that the furlough agreement did not specifically state others could not ride with the popular hip-hop artist, whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr.

"We have good reason to believe that this favorable result was reached because of the proactive and assertive approach taken to protect T.I.'s rights by providing BOP (Bureau of Prisons) officials and the media with reliable and accurate information that T.I. did not intend to violate his transfer furlough or any other BOP rules en route from the prison facility in Arkansas to the halfway house in Atlanta," Sadow said Thursday.

It was initially believed prison officials objected to his use of a luxury tour bus for the trip from Arkansas to Georgia, but the furlough agreement T.I. signed specified only that he would travel in a "POV," a privately owned vehicle.

He will leave the halfway house and begin a yearlong probation term on September 29, Sadow said.

The rapper served two stints in the Arkansas prison. He was there for seven months in 2009 as part of a sentence negotiated two years ago to resolve federal gun charges. Those charges followed his attempt to buy three machine guns in the parking lot of an Atlanta grocery store.

His latest time behind bars was triggered by his arrest, along with his wife, after a motorcycle officer stopped their car on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California, a year ago.

A police report said suspected drugs were found in the couple's car and they were both arrested on drug charges. The charge against the rapper was later dropped, but he failed a drug test given by his parole officer.

Report: Man United $1B IPO deal OK'd

SINGAPORE -- Manchester United's planned $1 billion public offering has been approved by Singapore's stock exchange, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Friday.
The initial public offering likely will happen by the end of the year and involve ordinary and nonvoting preferred shares, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been officially announced.
Manchester United is owned by the Glazer family of the United States. It has been valued at $1.9 billion by Forbes magazine, which has ranked it as soccer's most valuable team for the last seven years. However, the club has about $750 million of debt.
The Glazers are expected to maintain control of the defending English Premier League champions but they could raise $1 billion by making between 25 percent and 30 percent of United available.
By listing shares in Singapore, Manchester United is betting that Asians, who account for more than half of the club's estimated 333 million fans, could be willing to pay more for a piece of their favorite team.
The club was bought by the Glazers for $1.4 billion in 2005 when they de-listed it from the London Stock Exchange.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish 'Facebook' separates the sexes

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2011/images/09/12/t1larg.faceglat.jpg

(CNN) - Showing that modernity might, just might, find its place even in a world predisposed to the most traditional of customs, in walks FaceGlat: an ultra-Orthodox Jewish answer, at least for some, to Facebook.

Among the most conservative of Orthodox Jews, often referred to as Haredi Jews, modesty reigns. Women wear long sleeves and skirts, and they cover their hair after marriage. Men dress as their ancestors did centuries ago. The genders are separated in synagogues, on wedding dance floors and, in certain neighborhoods, on buses.

CNN reported this year on one community newspaper that went so far as to erase women from an iconic news photograph, all in an effort to uphold its values. The paper later apologized, not for its beliefs about modesty and featuring women in photographs but for how the matter was handled.

So social media – which, in the case of Facebook, invite sharing, tagging and gawking at photographs, among other interactions – may not be the most welcoming space for people with this kind of faith.

A 20-something self-taught website builder out of Israel, Yaakov Swisa, seems to be trying to change this.

Ynetnews, an English-language Israeli news site, reported in late July the establishment of FaceGlat, a Swisa-made social network that segregates men and women, blocks immodest advertisements and pictures, and uses a filter to keep language in comments and status updates clean.

“People who are God-fearing and care about their children’s education cannot tolerate the ads and pictures one sees on the regular Facebook,” Ynetnews wrote, quoting Swisa. “I personally know people who have deteriorated spiritually because of all kinds of things they were introduced to there.”

The name FaceGlat is a blending of Facebook with the word glatt, as in “glatt kosher,” the highest level of kosher when it comes to Jewish dietary laws surrounding meat.

FaceGlat, Ynetnews reported Swisa as saying, is “not an alternative for Facebook” but rather “a cleaner option for those who are already there. If it encourages people to open accounts or waste their time instead of studying Torah – it’s a failure. It’s not worth a thing. I promised myself that if that happened I would close it down.”

According to a Le Monde report, posted late last week on Worldcrunch, a still-open FaceGlat has more than 2,000 users and is getting about 100 new accounts per week.

Le Monde said Swisa is administering his fledgling site with “a lot of improvisation.” And even though upon signing up with FaceGlat, members are separated by gender into two distinct networks (click left to join the women, right to join the men), the French newspaper reported that Swisa is looking to purchase software that will automatically find and delete photographs revealing too much skin. Le Monde also said that although his website is available in English and Hebrew, Swisa plans to translate it into Russian and French.

“Orthodox Jews need the Internet, at home and at work alike,” Swisa told Le Monde. “My website allows them to browse freely, while offering maximum security.”

Swisa, who could not be reached Monday for comment, reportedly is a resident of Kfar Chabad in Israel. That village is connected to the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, a Hasidic Jewish branch that represents just one expression of ultra-Orthodox Judaism.

Chabad-Lubavitch is known for its outreach in the secular world and has long used technology “to broadcast Jewish values to a global audience,” said Yaacov Behrman, a spokesman for Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.

“Internet, as all media, has both positive and negative aspects,” Behrman said. “The decision of whether to have Internet in the home or not is an individual one. It is imperative for parents to monitor the level of access made available to their children,” and that’s relevant no matter how religious the family is.

But for many others living in the Haredi or ultra-Orthodox world, use of media – including television, films and secular newspapers - is greatly discouraged. Social media, especially, are “like the Wild West,” said Rabbi Avi Shafran, a spokesman for Agudath Israel of America, an advocacy organization for Haredi Jews.

“Internet is fully accepted for work purposes” and can only be used in the home with “strict control,” Shafran said. “Social media is still where the line is drawn.”

He said, “The very medium itself is something we tend to shun because it’s something that’s not easily contained. Once a person’s involved, it tends to take over one’s life. … We prefer people to meet their friends by turning to them and talking to them.”

So whether FaceGlat can gain much of a following in the social media scramble remains questionable. Even Behrman of Chabad-Lubavitch, who emphasized that the new site has no official connection to his movement, isn’t a member.

“Nope,” Behrman said. “I use Facebook.”

Djokovic deposes Nadal in U.S. Open epic

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic celebrates after his grueling victory over Rafael Nadal in the 2011 U.S. Open final.

(CNN) -- World No. 1 Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal for the sixth consecutive time to win his first U.S. Open title in dramatic style on Monday and avenge last year's final defeat by the Spaniard.

The Serbian triumphed in an epic lasting four hours and 10 minutes, defying his tiring body after Nadal fought magnificently to take the match to a fourth set.

The 6-2 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 scoreline did not reflect the intensity and closeness of the match in New York, the climax of the tennis season's fourth and final major tournament.

Both players battled to a standstill, but Djokovic had the edge when it mattered most as he claimed his fourth Grand Slam title and third this year, winning 146 points to Nadal's 122 .The 24-year-old is now all-but certain to be the first player other than Nadal or Roger Federer to hold the year-end top ranking since Andy Roddick in 2003, and also took home the winner's check of $1.8 million.

As he did in the Wimbledon final in early July, Djokovic shell-shocked Nadal with his powerhouse play and subtle skills, coming back from 2-0 down in the first two sets.Nadal did not relinquish his title without a fight, but was unable to convert eight of his 14 break-points in a see-saw match featuring many titanic rallies that thrilled the capacity crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
"I'm disappointed to lose, but Novak has been doing unbelievable things. What he has done this year will be impossible to repeat," world No. 2 said on-court after the match.

"We pushed our bodies to the limits. I tried to play aggressive but he was making fantastic comebacks. I fought for every ball."

Djokovic capitalized on 11 of his 26 break points, firing 55 winners to 32 while making 51 unforced errors to Nadal's 37.

Djokovic served for the title at 6-5 in the 84-minute third set, but Nadal broke back and took the tie-break in commanding style with just under three and a half hours on the clock.

Djokovic needed treatment on his back before winning the opening game of the fourth set, then took a full medical timeout before breaking Nadal's serve.

The halt in action seemed to extinguish the Mallorcan's renewed energy, and he fell to his 10th defeat in 15 hard-court encounters with Djokovic, who reduced his career deficit against Nadal to 13-16 as he won his 10th title of 2011.

It was third time lucky for Djokovic, who was beaten by Federer in the 2007 final at Flushing Meadows.

Iran court says it is considering bail for American hikers

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- The Iranian Judiciary said it is considering a request for setting bail in the case of two American hikers accused of spying.

The report, posted on Iran's Judiciary website, seemed to contradict a statement by the hikers' lawyer that bail was already set in the case.

Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer will be released from Tehran's Evin prison after a $500,000 bail is paid for each of them, their attorney, Masoud Shafiee, said Tuesday.

The judiciary report puts into question whether or when the hikers will be released from prison.
"The two U.S. nationals accused of spying have not been released and their attorneys' requests for setting bail is being considered," the court statement said.

"The case is currently being considered by the presiding judge and any related news will be given by the judiciary. No other source is entitled to provide news about this case."

The court's statement also seems to differ with what President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told NBC on Tuesday.

Ahmadinejad said the hikers could be released "in a couple of days."
"OK, these two persons will be released," Ahmadinejad said. "Is it going to be over? We do it, for example, in (a) humanitarian gesture. Is it going to solve the problems? I hope so."

Fattal, Bauer and a third hiker, Sarah Shourd, were seized on July 31, 2009, after apparently straying across an unmarked border between Iraq and Iran. Iranian authorities arrested them, claiming they were spies and had entered the country illegally.

Shourd, who is now Bauer's fiancee, was released last year for medical reasons, although authorities said her case remains open.

Moody's cuts SocGen, Agricole ratings

Shares in all three French banks have fallen amid fears over their exposure to Greek debt.

(FT) -- Moody's has downgraded its credit ratings on Crédit Agricole and Société Générale and kept France's biggest bank BNP Paribas on review for a downgrade.

The decision on Wednesday follows days of uncertainty surrounding French banks' exposure to Greek sovereign debt, which has led to violent swings in their share prices.

French officials have resisted pressure to shore up their besieged banking sector as senior eurozone officials instead increased efforts to avert a Greek default.

Christian Noyer, governor of France's central bank, insisted on Wednesday that the country's banks had enough capital to withstand any losses from a Greek default and said the downgrades of Crédit Agricole and Société Générale were "relatively good news".

"French banks have an excellent rating, the same level as other major European banks, HSBC, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse. There's no really bad news on the way, and Moody's says the level of capital of French banks allows them to absorb any potential losses on sovereign debt," he told RTL radio.

"It's a very small downgrade, and Moody's had a higher rating than the other agencies so it's just put them on the same level or slightly better than the others."Moody's cited "persistent fragility in the bank financing markets" for a one-notch downgrade to SocGen's long-term debt, given the bank's continued reliance on the wholesale funding markets. Crédit Agricole's large exposure to the risks of further deterioration in Greece were cited as the reasons behind a one-notch downgrade in its bank financial strength rating, from C-plus to C.

Moody's said it was keeping BNP Paribas' long-term Aa2 ratings under review while it assessed the potential impact of funding difficulties on the bank's credit profile.

SocGen and BNP Paribas shares were among the worst performers in Europe on Wednesday. SocGen shares, which ended up 15 per cent on Tuesday after a fall of nearly 11 per cent on Monday, fell back 5.6 per cent to €16.88 in early trade. BNP's shares, which rose more than 7 per cent on Tuesday, fell 5.5 per cent to €26.52 and Crédit Agricole's were 3.5 per cent weaker at €4.99

The Moody's downgrade coincided with an announcement from BNP that it plans to sell €70bn ($95.7bn) of risk-weighted assets to help ease mounting investor fears about French bank leverage and funding, two days after SocGen unveiled a similar plan.

The bank said the asset sales would reduce its balance sheet by around 10 per cent. BNP Paribas also said it will reduce its US dollar funding needs by $60bn by the end of 2012 in a bid to cut costs that have increased significantly recently following jitters on the US money markets about the euro debt crisis.

Lindsay Lohan: My sis is gorgeous, haters

Lindsay Lohan: My sis is gorgeous, haters

Photos of 17-year-old Aliana Lohan, little sister to Lindsay Lohan, popped up on the Web about a week ago but the saga surrounding them is still going strong.

Ali's mom, dad, sister and representative have all come to her defense after the Interwebs started to question that it was plastic surgery that caused the apparent change in her facial features. Yesterday, Ali's rep explained to CNN that "Aliana has never had any type of plastic surgery in her life, nor has she ever considered it."

The rep went on to say that it was a growth spurt, not surgery, that caused the difference in Ali's features, and Lindsay has once again taken to her Twitter account to stick up for her little sis.

"I love how haters pick on my sister yet every runway model is just as thin," she wrote last week. "My sister is gorgeous and I'm so proud of her and her career!!!" She also RT a comment from celebrity blogger Sandra Rose, who opined, "Ali Lohan, @lindsaylohan's little sister doesn't care what you think. She'll eat when she gets damn good and ready."

And yet, there are still those who remain unconvinced - plastic surgeons, who haven't been associated with Ali Lohan, have been weighing in left and right. What do you think?

Spurs want to sign David Beckham

LONDON -- Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing David Beckham when his Major League Soccer contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy expires at the end of the year.

The 36-year-old midfielder trained with Tottenham during the last MLS offseason and manager Harry Redknapp is interested in signing him in January.

"I don't think you would ever say no to David Beckham. He would bring a lot to any club," Redknapp said Friday. "He came and trained with us last year. He was fantastic to have around the place as a player and as a person.

"He was a top-class professional and he's the kind of lad you would like around the place. He is someone the young lads look up to and he is a great role model for anybody."

Although Beckham trained with Spurs in January, the club failed to agree a loan deal for the former England captain.

And talks are yet to start between Spurs and Beckham's representatives ahead of the MLS season ending in November.

"What are the chances of us signing him? I have no idea," Redknapp said. "I'll be honest. I don't have a clue. I wouldn't know the financial situation or what it would take. I have never discussed it with the chairman.

"Would I like him here? Of course I would."

But London rival QPR, which is back in the Premier League after 15 years and under new ownership, also wants to sign the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player.

"It's something that I believe will be good for the club," QPR chairman Tony Fernandes, who is also chief executive of Air Asia, told Sky Sports TV. "But it's a long, long way from anything."

Microsoft unveils a radically redesigned Windows 8

Windows 8 brings a tablet-like visual feel to Microsoft's decades-old operating system.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (CNNMoney) -- Windows 8 is coming soon -- and it looks nothing like the Windows you're used to.

Microsoft formally introduced Windows 8 on Tuesday to thousands of software developers gathered at the company's annual Build conference in Anaheim, Calif. The software giant said it reimagined Windows for the "changing world of computing."

Windows 8 has a completely new visual interface, optimized for touchscreens on mobile devices like tablets.

The result is a computer that operates as a kind of hybrid PC and media tablet, with all the functions of a standard PC operating system but the user experience of a tablet.

Windows 8 is designed to be "touch first, but equally at home with mouse and keyboard," said Steven Sinofsky, Microsoft's Windows division president.

The changes can't come soon enough for Microsoft: Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) iPad is cutting deeply into PC sales, setting off warning bells for companies like Microsoft that rely heavily on consumers buying new PCs. Windows 7, which has been on the market for two years, only recently eclipsed Microsoft's decade-old Windows XP in its number of users.
Click to tour the new Windows 8

Windows 8 launched in "preview mode" on Tuesday for developers to toy around with. It didn't work perfectly in Microsoft's demonstration, but software in this early stage of development often is bug-ridden.

Still, the preview revealed a refined, simple, and in many ways elegant user interface that looks very similar to Microsoft's mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7. The change will mark Windows' biggest visual overhaul in decades.

Users begin with an opening screen that looks a bit like Microsoft's Bing search engine home page. A large photo takes up the majority of the screen, with icons that show the user how many e-mails, messages and notifications are waiting for them.

After the user logs in, they reach a "start screen" featuring interactive tiles that launch with a tap of the finger or the click of a mouse. Unlike most tablets on the market today, Windows 8-powered devices will be able to launch applications side-by-side. That means users can multitask between, say, a movie and an instant messaging program.

Behind the user interface, which Microsoft dubs "Metro," is a streamlined operating system that Microsoft says runs more efficiently than the current version of the OS, Windows 7.

"Everything that was great for Windows 7, we took that and made it better for Windows 8," said Sinofsky.

To prove it, Sinofsky demonstrated Windows 8 operating on a three-year old, first-generation netbook. Using Windows Task Manager, he showed that Windows 8 actually used less memory than the netbook did while running Windows 7. He also demonstrated everyday PCs, laptops and tablets that booted in less than 10 seconds.

That efficiency is hugely important to customers, who roundly rejected Windows Vista for its chunkiness. A lightweight OS is even more important now as tablet computers grow in popularity.

That's particularly crucial for Windows 8, because for the first time, Windows will work on power-sipping ARM-based chips made by Qualcomm (QCOM, Fortune 500), Samsung, and Texas Instruments (TXN, Fortune 500), among others.

"I promise you we did not lose sight of fundamentals," Sinofsky said.

But make no mistake: Windows 8 is a PC operating system. It may be optimized for touch and mobile, but applications are largely bifurcated into "Metro-style" apps and desktop applications.

There are applications that just won't work on a tablet user interface that are going to look and feel a whole lot like your old-fashioned point-and-click Windows-based software.

For example, one press of a Windows button switches back and forth between the Metro experience and the desktop experience. Windows 8, in a sense, has two interfaces.

In other words, Microsoft is betting that people want a full PC experience on the go and a tablet-like experience on their PCs. That's very different from the approach by Apple or Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), which build two separate operating systems for PCs and mobile devices.

Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) began revealing some of Windows 8's features as early as June. In a YouTube video, the company showed off some aspects of the new "Metro" user interface, and since then, the company has been giving weekly sneak peaks in a blog written by Sinofsky.

The company hasn't yet set a launch date for Windows 8, but it has hinted that its new operating system will begin rolling out in 2012.

Warships free hostage taken from yacht off Yemen

(CNN) -- Warships stopped a suspected pirate skiff Saturday and rescued a crew member of a French yacht that sent a distress call this week off the coast of Yemen, officials said.
A helicopter located the yacht after the Thursday night distress call, but an inspection found no one on board.
Two vessels, one French and the other Spanish, trailed the skiff and ordered it to stop, according to European Naval Force Somalia. All of the suspects were detained.
Another yacht crew member was believed to have been killed when the suspects boarded the vessel, the naval force said in a statement.
The skiff sank during Saturday's operation, but neither the hostage nor the suspected pirates were harmed, officials said.
The French foreign ministry said Friday that the number of people on board the yacht was not known.
The yacht was found eight miles (13 kilometers) off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden, officials said.
Yemen, the poorest country in the Middle East, lies opposite Somalia on the Gulf of Aden, and the area's waters have been the site of numerous pirate attacks on merchant vessels.

Djokovic comeback stuns Federer

Novak Djokovic celebrates his stunning comeback in the U.S. Open semifinal.
(CNN) -- Novak Djokovic produced a stunning against-the-odds comeback to defeat Roger Federer 6-7 (7-9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 to reach the final of the U.S. Open.

The world number one was two sets down against a rampant Federer and looked to be heading for an early exit.

But the Serb dug deep to win the next three sets 6-3, 6-2, 7-5, saving two match points in the fifth set in the process.

"It was definitely the biggest win this year," an ecstatic Djokovic said on court immediately following his victory.
"One of the biggest wins of my career."

But Djokovic looked shell-shocked after Federer had raced in to a two set lead.

After succumbing to a first set tie breaker at a partisan Flushing Meadows, Federer broke Djokovic twice in the second.

With the crowd behind Federer, Djokovic cut a dejected figure going into the third but an early break put the pressure on the Swiss. Suddenly Djokovic was reborn and he quickly leveled the match two sets all.

Yet his comeback appeared to be in vain.

Federer made a crucial break at 4-3 in the final set, and with two match points at 40-15 it looked like the Swiss would be competing in the final.

The turning point was an incredible return from Djokovic to save match point. The Serb went on to break back and, more importantly, win over the partisan crowd with his display of sheer determination.

The psychological ball was now in Djokovic's court, who saw out the last four games to snatch an unlikely win. Such was the turn around in fortunes with the spectators he even made time to dance with the crowd at the end.

Djokovic will play either Spain's Raphael Nadal or Great Britain's Andy Murray, who are currently playing their semifinal match.

Sex and the City (1998-2004)

There was something for everyone in this dynamic foursome: From sex-pot Samantha (Kim Cattrall) and androgynous attorney Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) to fashionista Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Park Avenue princess Charlotte (Kristin Davis), costume designer Patricia Fields loaded the ladies up with designer duds and stylish touches.
The Wonder Years (1988-1993)

Gossip Girl (2007-2011)

When a show centers on Manhattan life, there's a good chance you'll see some fashion. Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Serena van der Woodsen's (Blake Lively) trendy mixed prints and couture frocks bring as much drama as their peers on the Upper East Side. The entire gang shows off any girl's style wish list week to week, compliments of star stylist Eric Daman.Charlie's Angels (2011)

The classic crime-fighting trio gets a 2011 revamp—with a modern-day style refresh. While we await the premiere episode this fall, star Minka Kelly has gushed over her wardrobe of high-end designs, from Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent—and we've seen enough trailers to know the entire cast is equally well-outfitted.

Bewitched (1964-1972)

With the wiggle of her nose, Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) could make a closet full of sleeveless shift dresses look like a million bucks. While the costumes husband Darren appeared in (and the antics the family members got them into) were comical and creative, Samantha plethora of pretty day dresses and romantic dressing gowns were a housewife's dream. Will and Grace (1998-2006)

Despite a multiple crumbling relationships throughout the series' run, Grace (Debra Messing) never once missed a style beat (no sweatpants for this girl!), while Will (Eric McCormack) kept a closet full of perfectly cut suits on hand. Bonus: Jack (Sean Hayes) gave the ever-polished Grace a run for her money in sweater-vests and suits.

Mad Men (2007-2011)

Tailored pencil skirts, divine cocktail dresses and absolutely impeccable hair and makeup are the foundation to the ultimate throwback show. In fact, the styles are so coveted, Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant created a capsule collection of similar styles for Banana Republic.Designing Women (1986-1993)

Sugarbaker Designs may have specialized in interiors, but the Southern belles at the helm showed their fashion savvy in vibrant poly-blends and contoured cheeks. While the group's color-bright frocks and high-volume hair may look thoroughly '80s, these ladies were at the forefront of fashion at the time.

The Flintstones (1960-1966)

Anything but the stone ages! Micro-minis, exposed shoulders, and statement necklaces showed off the ladies curves. Paired with architecturally coiffed 'dos and a swipe of red lipstick, Wilma and Betty were perpetually primped and ready to go.

That Girl (1966-1971)

That suit, those gloves, those shoes, that purse. Marlo Thomas played aspiring actress Ann Marie, one of the first portrayals of a career girl (as opposed to a spouse or homemaker), and she had the wardrobe of a wonderfully independent woman. Her rainbow assortment of mod clothes was the perfect complement to her bubbly personality.

Hacked TV remote will auto-mute Snooki

This DIY remote control, to be shown off at an upcoming conference, can turn the TV on mute when certain words are spoken.

When Matt Richardson works from his home in Brooklyn, New York, he likes to keeps the TV on to stay informed, but some celebrity or another is always taking up airtime and bugging him.

"A while ago it was Charlie Sheen. And then it was Sarah Palin. And then it was Donald Trump," said Richardson, who is a video producer for Make Magazine. "And after a while I realized there's sort of always someone who I don't really want to hear about."

Like any good hacker, Richardson decided to come up with a fix: He developed a do-it-yourself TV remote control that will automatically mute the television when certain celebrity names are mentioned.

He plans to debut and explain the hack at the upcoming Maker Faire event in New York. The name of his talk is "Enough Already: Silencing Celebs with Arduino."

Unless you're speaking at that do-it-yourself inventors' conference, you may be wondering: "What the heck is Arduino?" It's basically a piece of computer hardware that can be programmed to do anything you want. In this case, Richardson combined a couple of Arduino circuit boards with an infrared LED light -- that little red bubble on the front of your TV remote -- and programmed the whole thing to interact with a TV's closed-captioning system.

The DIY gadget reads the closed-captioning transcript as it's aired and then automatically mutes the television for 30 seconds when it picks up certain words. That list of unspeakables can be re-programmed (so if you really love Sarah Palin, don't worry -- you could mute President Obama or Sen. Harry Reid references instead).

As long as that person's name keeps coming up, the remote keeps muting the TV. The first time he got it to work, Richardson said he "was in silent bliss for that 30 seconds I didn't have to hear about Kim Kardashian."

The whole thing cost about $70 to make, he said, and he built and coded it in about a week, working only in his spare time. It's worth noting that this isn't a product Richardson expects to be commercialized -- it's just for fun. He posted the code online so other people can play around with it.

The implementation itself is pretty crude, he said. Closed captioning doesn't always appear in real-time, so sometimes the system will miss a first reference.

Japanese women reach London Games

TOKYO -- Women's World Cup champions Japan secured a place in the 2012 London Olympics after Australia beat China 1-0 in the final Asian qualifying tournament.

Japan was held to a 1-1 draw with North Korea on Thursday. But Australia's win over host China guaranteed that Japan will finish in the top two in the tournament being played in Jinan, China.

Japan remained first in the six-team standings with 10 points, two ahead of North Korea. Australia moved up to third place with six points, while China dropped to fourth with five points.

The tournament ends Sunday. The top two teams qualify for the Olympics.

Bolton 0 - 5 Man Utd

Manchester United completed the best start to a Premier League season by smashing five goals past a helpless Bolton at the Reebok Stadium without reply.
Wayne Rooney scored his second successive hat-trick to take his personal tally to eight in four games, part of an overall team tally of 18 - 13 of which have come in the last two matches.

Indeed, aside from Manchester City, Rooney has now scored more league goals on his own this season than any of the clubs attempting to keep pace with this unbelievable start in which one city appears to have annexed the entire championship between them.

Javier Hernandez marked his first start of the season with two goals, although on a night when everyone in red played their part, it was a dazzling run from teenager Phil Jones to create Rooney's second which sparkled the most.

Indeed, the only downside for Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of another Champions League quest getting under way against Benfica on Wednesday was the suspected broken foot midfielder Tom Cleverley sustained in an early collision with Kevin Davies, and an injury to Jonny Evans.

Although he endorsed David de Gea on Friday, it was claimed Ferguson was having extreme doubts over whether to drop the 20-year-old into the maelstrom of the Reebok Stadium, even now Owen Coyle has smoothed off quite a lot of that infamous abrasive edge.

Ronald Cheng quietly marries girlfriend Sammie Yu in 'homemade' wedding

HONG KONG: Hong Kong singer-actor Ronald Cheng has always been very secretive about his relationship matters, even going so far as to keep his marriage to singer Charlene Choi a secret until they had a very public divorce in March last year.

However, things seem to have changed for Cheng since he became a dad in July this year.

The 38-year-old actor played it straight when he spoke to reporters during a promotional event for his new film "Treasure Hunt" in Hong Kong on Tuesday, and revealed that he had officially married girlfriend Sammie Yu on July 22, Hong Kong media said.

"I got married, on July 22 at home. She (Yu) wore a wedding gown and I wore a suit and registered [our marriage].

"We'll hold the wedding banquet when my daughter turns one and is able to walk and hand us the wedding rings," said Cheng.

Cheng, who showed off his wedding band during the promotional event, added that it was a moving wedding where the bride cried and the groom kneeled, but declined to elaborate on what sort of vows he had prepared for the 'homemade' wedding.

He went on to express that being a father is a very enjoyable experience and said he wished to "have a few more" children.

Cheng said he had to put these plans on hold because Yu is still recovering from the caesarean section she underwent during the birth of their baby girl.

Cheng's ex-wife Choi gave the couple her blessings when told about their union during a promotional event on Wednesday.

"Congratulations! [I] wish them happiness. Now his (Cheng) status is different.

"He has become a father and I believe he is a very capable dad," said Choi.

Choi, who is currently dating Hong Kong singer William Chan, said she too would like to have many children but the time was not right yet.

Apple wins "iPad court case"

Apple won the latest battle on Friday in a global legal war with Samsung when a German court banned the Korean firm from selling a tablet computer in Germany, ruling it had copied the iPad.

DUESSELDORF, Germany: Apple won the latest battle on Friday in a global legal war with Samsung when a German court banned the Korean firm from selling a tablet computer in Germany, ruling it had copied the iPad.

The court, in the western city of Duesseldorf, said Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 computer, a rival to Apple's iconic iPad, had infringed key patent laws.

Presiding judge Johanna Brueckner-Hoffmann said there was a "clear impression of similarity" between the Apple and the Samsung products.

As an example, she cited the "minimalist, modern form" of the two firms' products, with flat screens and rounded edges.

However, it limited the sales ban to Germany, despite ruling in a previous judgement that the ban should be Europe-wide.

The court ruled that "it could only be competent to order a Europe-wide ban for a firm headquartered outside the European Union if this firm has a German subsidiary," it said in a statement.

The Korean firm, which denies Apple's argument that it had "slavishly" copied the market-leading iPhone and iPad, had to pull its latest Galaxy Tab 7.7 inch from a major electronics fair in Berlin earlier this week in view of the case.

Industry analysts say that in the fast-moving world of tablet computers, which have a very short shelf-life before being replaced by improved products, even a temporary ban on sales can be fatal.

The two firms are also locked in legal battles in Australia, the United States and Asia. Samsung has responded to Apple's accusations by filing suits of its own in Seoul, asking for a ban on sales of the US firm's products in South Korea.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab, hailed by some in the industry as an "iPad killer", has been a huge-selling rival to the touch-screen phenomenon.

Despite their prickly competition, the two actually have a close business relationship.

Apple was Samsung's second-biggest client in 2010 after Japan's Sony, accounting for four percent of the South Korean firm's 155 trillion won ($143 billion) annual revenue.

Roger Federer was back to his imperious best to brush aside the challenge of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and book a U.S. Open semifinal clash with world number one Novak Djokovic.

Federer, a five-time champion in New York, gained revenge for a run of two successive defeats to the Frenchman -- at Wimbledon and in Montreal -- to record a 6-4 6-3 6-3 victory.

He will now face Djokovic in the final four on Saturday after the Serbian edged past fellow countryman Janko Tipsarevic, who retired in the fourth set.

Tipsarevic took the game to his practice partner and had just leveled the match at one set all when he became hampered by injury. He eventually threw in the towel with the score at 7-6 6-7 6-0 3-0.

Qatar 2022 could cost £138bn

The cost of hosting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is expected to reach £138 billion - with £28 billion alone spent on creating a new city which will host the opening match and the final.
Lusail will be built in the East of Qatar, with the football stadium the focal point, 15 km north of Doha. The website set-up for the city - www.lusail.com - states that "the aim is to establish a distinctive 21st century iconic city which celebrates the special cultural and geographical heritage of Qatar and the Gulf Region". It will have a population of 200,000.

Dr Nicola Ritter, a German legal and financial analyst, told an investors' summit held in Munich that of the £138 billion cost, stadiums and facilities would carry a bill of £107 billion while transport infrastructure would amount to £31 billion.

The cost of air-conditioning 12 stadia will be around £30 billion, with a further £48 billion allocated for training facilities and accommodation for players and fans.

Transport improvements include expanding the New Doha International Airport and constructing the new Doha port where it is planned some fans will be accommodated on cruise ships, according to a report in Construction News.

At present the port is due for completion in 2023, but schedules will be brought forward in time for the World Cup finals.

The Doha metro rail link is due to be open by 2015 but is running behind.

Montolivo will commit to Viola - agent

Riccardo Montolivo: Viola contract expires in 2012

Reported Arsenal target Riccardo Montolivo looks likely to remain at Fiorentina, according to the player's agent.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger sent scouts to watch Montolivo during Italy's Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia on Tuesday night with a view to signing the highly-rated playmaker on a free transfer in the summer.

Montolivo has been slow to commit his future to Fiorentina, who insisted they would not sell the 26-year-old to another Serie A side during the recent transfer window, but agent Giovanni Branchini now says that it's just a matter of time before a new contract is agreed.

"There are clubs interested in the player, this is normal," Branchini told Calciomercato. "His contract in Italy ends in June and we do not have any plans to meet with the Fiorentina management.

"But we are calm and dialogue is not broken with the club. Throughout the year we will find a solution that is good for both parties."

Documents show real reason T.I. went back to prison

U.S. marshals removed T.I. from an Atlanta halfway house and placed him in the federal prison.

Rapper T.I.'s furlough from prison was cut short last week because prison officials objected to his manager and a reality TV producer riding with him on a trip to a halfway house, according to a prison document.

"Such people were not authorized to travel with him in the conditions of his furlough," says a Bureau of Prisons report obtained by CNN. "He further indicated he was discussing a new reality series and a book with those individuals."

The two men whose presence was questioned by prison officials each said they and T.I. believed they were allowed to ride with him since they were on the prison's approved list of visitors.

Prison officials, who escorted T.I. to his bus the morning he was released, never told him only his wife could travel with him and he was never asked to list those who would be on board, said his defense lawyer, Steve Sadow.

U.S. marshals removed T.I. from an Atlanta halfway house and placed him in the federal prison in Atlanta a day after his release from the Federal Correctional Center in Forrest City, Arkansas.

It was initially believed prison officials objected to his use of a luxury tour bus for the trip from Arkansas to Georgia, but the furlough agreement T.I. signed specified only that he would travel in a "POV," a privately-owned vehicle.

The popular hip-hop artist, whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., is serving an 11-month sentence for violating his parole on a gun conviction. Unless prison officials conclude he did not violate his furlough agreement, he is expected to stay locked up until that sentence is complete on September 29, documents indicated.

Bureau of Prisons officials are expected to review the suspension of his furlough, but it is not known when a decision might come, Sadow said Thursday.

T.I.'s manager, Brian Sher, sent a statement to prison officials explaining that he had no idea it was a violation of the furlough for him to accompany his client on the trip.

"It was clear to me that Mr. Harris believed that I was permitted to be with him on the trip back to Atlanta because I had been authorized to visit him and have contact with during his time in Forrest City," Sher said. "During my time with him on the ride back to Atlanta, no business was conducted with Mr. Harris."

Cris Abrego, a reality TV producer who was on the bus, wrote to prison officials that he also believed it was allowed since he "was on the authorized visitor list, and had visited with Mr. Harris a couple of times prior to his release."

A book and a VH1 series, which publicists announced the day of T.I.'s release, had been negotiated months before, his entertainment attorney, Jonathan Leonard, said in another letter to prison officials.

In case prison officials were miffed that their inmate was traveling in luxury, T.I.'s wife sent a letter explaining that his attorneys believed it was safer than a car because of expected media attention to his release.

"We felt this could cause an accident and jeopardize our and other travelers' safety," Tameka "Tiny" Cottle-Harris wrote. "We knew we had a long trip and did not want to create an unsafe situation as we traveled so we thought it was a good idea to travel by bus."

When T.I. walked out of prison on August 31, he tweeted, "The storm is over & da sun back out." He had been expected to complete the last weeks of his sentence in a community service center, or halfway house, in Atlanta.

VH1 announced the reality TV show soon after he boarded his bus. The as-yet-untitled 10-episode series, which will premiere in December, will show T.I. "as he re-adjusts to life as a free man after being incarcerated for nearly a year in a federal prison in Arkansas," VH1 said.

He was locked up behind the high walls of the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta the next afternoon.

The rapper served two stints in the Arkansas prison. He served seven months there in 2009 as part of an unusual sentence negotiated two years ago to resolve federal gun charges.

While the charge against the rapper was later dropped, he failed a drug test given by his parole officer.
